Passage: Psalm 147:1-11

Thessalonica is a port city on the Aegean Sea in Greece. Paul went there on his second missionary journey along with Silas and Timothy. The city had a large Jewish population so Paul went to the synagogue and proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah. Many Jews believed along with a large number of Greeks and the church in Thessalonica was born. However, the Jewish leaders rejected the message. They stirred up opposition to Paul and caused a riot. The believers protected Paul and helped him and his group escape the city during the night. All told, Paul was only in the city for about four weeks, but the impact for Christ was huge.

Not long after he left, Paul got word that many of the new believers had questions about the return of Jesus. Some members of the church had already died and the church was concerned that those people had missed out. They also were experiencing strong opposition and needed encouragement. Paul wrote this letter to help and he began with the common greeting, grace and peace. Those two things are vital gifts of God that are available to every believer. Whatever you face, God’s grace and peace are there for you and they will help you make an impact for Christ.
