Passage: Proverbs 4:20-27
A little girl was at the doctor’s office for a checkup. The kind doctor put his stethoscope to her chest and began listening to her heartbeat. Wanting to put her at ease and trying to relate to a children’s program she might watch, the doctor said as he was listening, “Do I hear Barney in there?” The little girl quickly replied, “No. Jesus is in my heart. Barney is on my underwear!” While the mind of a child may think concretely of the heart being the organ that is inside our body, when we speak of the heart, it refers to something else. Our heart is our inner self. It is the seat of our will and our emotions.
In order to be all that God designed you to be, you need to have a good heart and have the right person in your heart. While only God can see everything in your heart, you do show what is in our heart by what you do with your time, your talents and your treasures. You also reveal what is in your heart by your thoughts. The Apostle Paul showed that he had a heart for God through his life’s work and the letters he wrote to churches and individuals. As we look at Paul’s heart, which is expressed in his letter to Thessalonica, ask God to help you have a godly heart like his.
