Passage: Psalm 84:1-12
Jesus established the church and He loves the church. The universal church is comprised of every person on earth who is a believer in Jesus. The local church is a group of believers who gather to fulfill God’s purposes for their lives. Over 80% of the references in the New Testament to the church are referring to a local church in some city or area. God has many ways to help us understand how He wants a church to function. One way is to call the church the bride of Christ. Another way is to call the church God’s building. Another way is to call the church the body of Christ.
All of those are wonderful pictures, but there is one more that I like the best. The church is the family of God. God is our Father. Jesus is our elder brother. When we put our faith in Jesus and received Him as Lord and Savior, we were born into God’s family. All the believers in a church are our brothers and sisters in Christ. While many local churches are dysfunctional families, God wants your church and every church to be a strong, healthy family. You have an important part in making that happen.
