Passage: Galatians 5:13-25
When you believed in Jesus and received Him as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit came to dwell permanently inside your life. The Spirit is often associate with fire, such as in Acts 2 as we read that tongues of fire rested upon each of the believers gathered together when the Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost after Jesus had ascended back to heaven. The image of fire reminds us that the Holy Spirit keeps our hearts hot for God and gives the power to let our lives glow for God.
You can’t keep the Holy Spirit from being in you as a believer once you are born again, but it is possible to restrain Him from working through you and to let your heart grow cold to God. Self-centered actions such as immorality, bitterness, greed and worry are things that that put out the Spirit’s fire. In the church corporately, resistance to fresh visions or new methodologies that say, “We’ve never done it that way before” or “We don’t have the money” are ways to put out the Spirit’s fire. God always wants to do a fresh work in your life and in your church. For that to happen, the Spirit must have freedom to work. Watch for ways God is working and say yes to God!
