Passage: Psalm 119:105-112
I once read about a lady who went up to the preacher after a sermon one day. She was upset and said, “I’ll never come hear you again. I have been insulted and well – you just stroked the fur the wrong way!” The preacher calmly replied, “No, I didn’t stroke the fur the wrong way. I stroked the fur the right way, but the cat was going in the wrong direction.” God doesn’t call preachers and those who teach His Word to make people comfortable. He calls them to proclaim His Word to call people to Christ and help believers be conformed to His image.
Prophecy is not primary foretelling the future. It is forth-telling the Word of God to proclaim it and teach it. Treating the preaching and teaching of the Word of God with contempt is to count it as nothing or to reject it because it makes you uncomfortable. God wants you to commit to follow His Word when you hear it proclaimed. Because some who call themselves preachers/evangelists take God’s promises out of context or make up theology entirely, it is important to study the Word for yourself as well. Hold on to sound teaching and reject false teaching. Say yes to God’s Word and then live it out!
