Passage: 1 Peter 2:13-21

God is a God of order. He is the Eternal, Supreme authority over all things and He has ordained relational structures of authority for us to live under in this world. God calls for us to be submissive to authority. Submission is not blind obedience, but rather a voluntary response to follow the direction of the person in the position of authority as long as it doesn’t violate an express command of God. As we learn to respond to the human authorities in our lives, we learn to respond to His authority in our lives. Those structural authorities fall into four main categories: Family, Government, Employment, and Church.

Since Esther’s parents died, Mordecai took her into his home and functioned in the role of father. He wanted the best for her. When she was taken from his home to be placed into the harem of Xerxes, Mordecai told her not to reveal her Jewish identity. Her submission paved the way for a future time she would reveal her faith and help save her people. She was also submissive to Hegai, who was in charge of the harem. She followed his direction with the right spirit and God used it to make him favorable to her. Submissive to authority is a key way to shine like a star.
