Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked Him, ‘Of all the commandments, which is the most important?’ ‘The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.’ ” (Mark 12:28-31)
Passage: Psalm 95:1-7
Jewish religious leaders were always trying to trap Jesus with questions they thought He would answer in a way they could use to accuse Him. They never succeeded. One man seeing this, asked the question about the most important commandment. Jesus didn’t go to the 10 Commandments in Exodus. He pulled from Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18. We call this the Great Commandment. The key word for life is love. God loves you and He designed life to be lived with love expressed in three relationships. First is upward to God. Second is inward for yourself. Third is outward toward others. God wants you to experience His best and to be a blessing to others. Follow the Great Commandment and live a life on purpose for God.
