Passage: John 4:1-26

The majority of churches in America are plateaued or declining. One way that some churches try to encourage people to visit is to send out glossy mailers to promote an event or sermon series. There is definitely nothing wrong with that, but mailer companies offer to send the mail outs to specific zip codes or even specific neighborhoods that are designated by the church. Very few end up going to poor neighborhoods.

I wouldn’t criticize any church that narrows a mailer because they are seeking to reach out and to attract the most prospects with limited resources. However, Matthew points out that Jesus went through “all the towns and villages”. He didn’t skip out on some and target others. In John 4:4 we read that “He had to go through Samaria.” That wasn’t a requirement for travel. He felt compelled to go, because He wanted to reach out to the Samaritan people. To fulfill our purpose of evangelism, we must be willing to reach out to everyone we can, in every way we can, at any time we can – like Jesus.
