Read – (3 minutes) “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.” (Hebrews 9:27-28)
Passage: Psalm 116:1-19
I have a number of appointments scheduled this week and in the weeks ahead. I intend to keep those appointments, but I cannot guarantee I will keep them, because I have another appointment that will supersede them all if it comes up. You have the same appointment. It is the appointment with death. Right now, I’m not anticipating it and I’m hoping it doesn’t come soon. I was once asked what I’d like people to say at my funeral and I replied, “He sure was an old man!”
That said, I know that death is a part of life that I will face one day. The writer of Hebrews tells us that after death, there is an appointment to stand before God to face judgment. For the believer, that is not something to fear. Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sin and He rose again. When we believe in Him and receive Him as Lord and Savior, He guarantees us eternal life. Physical death is simply the transition point for the believer into the presence of God. That means the best is yet to be!
