The Birth of the Church

Read – (3 minutes) “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts 2:1-4)

Passage: Acts 2:37-41

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit to come on them. He then gave them their mission and a vision of carrying the gospel to the ends of the earth. For them to be able to fulfill that mission and see success for the vision, they had to have the power of God’s Spirit within them.

On the day of Pentecost, the power came down. The believers were filled with the indwelling presence of God’s Holy Spirit and they were empowered to proclaim the gospel. The believers witnessed about Jesus to those who gathered out of curiosity when they heard the strange sound coming from that upper room and then Peter preached the gospel to the crowd. 3000 people received Christ that day and the church was born. Their mission and vision is still ours today to reach people for Christ.
