Passage: Deuteronomy 6:4-7

One of the most exciting events in a track meet is the 400 meter relay and traditionally it is the last event of the meet. It consists of four runners who each run 100 meters of the race. The first runner holds a baton and passes it to the runner who passes it on to the next until the last runner takes the baton across the finish line. In the race, the speed of the runners is important, but the passing of the baton is essential. If the baton is dropped, the team will be disqualified. If the exchange is slow, the team will probably lose even if they have the best runners.

That relay and passing of the baton is a picture for the church. Every generation takes the baton of the gospel and must pass it on to others and especially to the succeeding generation. Paul had passed the baton to Timothy and he told Timothy to relay it on to others who would do the same. The first place we need to relay the gospel is in our homes to our children. The second place is through the ministry and teaching of our churches. Don’t keep the gospel baton to yourself. Answer the call of discipleship and rely it to others. Winning the world depends on it.
