Passage: Luke 21:5-19
On September 11, 2001, America was attacked by Islamic terrorists. That day, known simply as 9/11, shook America to her core. It deeply impacted people here and around the world. It resulted in tremendous economic damage and it caused deep anxiety. Three days later, President Bush spoke at a memorial service at the National Cathedral. In his message he said, “This conflict was begun on the timing and terms of others. It will end in a way and hour of our own choosing.” In the nearly nineteen years since that day, other crises have hit America and the world, but nothing has brought more drastic action that impacted people’s daily lives and economy more than the current battle to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic from exploding more than it already has.
When Paul spoke about the last days, he was referring to the entire time between the coming of Jesus to earth the first time and His coming again the second time. Terrible times relates to persecution of Christians and all kinds of crises the world will face. Every generation lives in the last days. Every generation is also closer to the return of Jesus than the previous one. These days are difficult ones, but they are not to be days of despair for God’s people. The Lord will see His people through.
