The Search for Meaning in Projects and Possessions

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. . . I amassed silver and gold for myself. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem as well – the delights of the heart of man.” (Ecclesiastes 2:4-8)
       Passage: Luke 12:13-21

In Solomon’s search for meaning apart from God through things that brought pleasure on earth, he did two things in addition having parties. One was to take on large projects. Two was to gain great wealth. From the perspective of the world, he was successful at both. His projects included multiple homes, large vineyards and farms, beautiful gardens and parks that made things that made the environment nicer for himself and the people. He grew the nation’s workforce, and he became the richest man in the world at the time. He also indulged himself in every sensual fantasy a man could have by marrying hundreds of women and having a large harem at his call.
Since Solomon’s search was under the sun without regard to God, he omitted the one project he did with God in mind. It was the building of the Temple, which was the high point spiritually for Solomon’s reign and life. Yet, he actually spent nearly twice as long building his own palace than he did the Temple. John D. Rockefeller was once asked, “How much money is enough money?” He replied, “Just a little bit more.” On their own, projects and possessions cannot give true satisfaction. Jesus can.
