Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear? But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? . . . Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished!’ ” (Luke 1:42-45)
Passage: Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 10:19-23
I don’t know how or where it originated, but crossing fingers is a superstition that has two basic meanings. One is doing it as a sign of wishing good luck for something to happen. The other is children doing it with a hand behind the back as a way of negating a promise. God never crossed his fingers like that. His plans will come to pass, and He keeps every promise He makes. Believing His promises is a key to joy.
Both Elizabeth and Mary believed God’s promise to them. Elizabeth found out about God’s promise that she would bear a child in her old age when Zachariah wrote out what an angel had said to him when he was ministering in the Temple. She believed that her baby would be the forerunner of the Messiah and so she knew the Messiah was going to be born to some woman in Israel. What she didn’t know was that Mary, her young cousin, would be that mother. Mary believed the angel Gabriel who told her about Jesus and when she arrived at Elizabeth’s home, Elizabeth immediately called her blessed for her belief. God is faithful to every promise He makes. They are a gift of joy for the heart.
