Develop Guidelines to Follow

Pray – (1/2 minute)

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:7-8)
  Passage: 1 Timothy 3:10-17

January is the highest month for people to join health clubs and fitness centers and make New Year’s resolutions. The majority of people will not keep those resolutions for even half of the month. The reason may be summed up in one man who wrote, “I joined a health club last year. I spent about 400 bucks. I haven’t lost a pound. . . Apparently, you have to show up.” Self-control and self-discipline are not developed primarily by the things you don’t do. They are developed by the positive things you do. Self-control grows as you develop habits which are based on guidelines you follow in your life.
In the physical realm, those guidelines would include following a balanced diet and committing yourself to a regular schedule of exercise. In the financial realm, those guidelines would include being a steward of the resources God has given. Give back through your local church to show your love for Christ (Deuteronomy 14:23) and then develop a budget for the rest as you trust God’s provision and care. In the spiritual realm, the guidelines include a Quiet Time each day, worship each week, a Bible Study class with others and give some time in service. Be consistent and live a life of self-control for Christ.
