Passage: 2 Peter 3:10-18
If I am asked whether I was a good student in school, my response could be, “Compared with who?” There were a number of my classmates who had higher GPA’s and there were a number who had lower ones. In the same way, being considered a good person depends on the standard to which one is compared. When a rich young man called Jesus “good”, Jesus gave the standard by which ultimate goodness is evaluated. That standard is the perfection of God.
The young man was right in calling Jesus good. He is God. The young man was wrong in thinking that he could earn his way into heaven. To do that, one would have to be perfect, and no one except Jesus meets that standard. James 2:10 tells us, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” The distinct goodness within the fruit of the Spirit comes from having a connection with God through faith in Jesus. Once you have received Christ, you are in His eternal family and His goodness is in you. Now, God wants you to grow and let His goodness flow out in your life.
