Be Committed to His Cause

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Jesus said, ‘Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went were you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not what to go.’ Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then He said to him, ‘Follow me!’ ” (John 21:17c-19)
Passage: Philippians 3:7-14
Jesus asked Peter three times “Do you love me?”. Those three times match the three denials Peter made between Jesus’ arrest and the dawn of the next day. Each time Jesus asked that question, Peter had to remember how he had denied the Lord, but each time, Jesus gave him a purpose for His life. The third time Jesus asked the question, He changed the word He used for love. The third time, He used the Greek word phileo, which is the word Peter used in responding to the first two questions. Jesus was meeting Peter where he was, to later take Peter where He wanted him to be, and He would use Peter to change the world. When Peter said he loved Jesus the third time, Jesus let him know that one day, he would give the ultimate testimony of his love for Jesus through his own martyrdom. God does not often reveal the exact trials we will face, but He does tell us that we will face trials. His call to us, as it was to Peter, is that regardless of what we may encounter, love for Jesus is a commitment to follow Him and be faithful to His cause. Love Jesus will a full commitment and never quit on living for Him.
