The Gift of Music

Pray – (1/2 minute)

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – "Now write down for yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them. . . So Moses wrote down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites."(Deuteronomy 31:19-22)

     Passage: Psalm 146:1-10

God created and wired us to be relational. He also wired us to be musical. It doesn’t matter whether someone can sing in tune, play an instrument, or barely can play the radio, God designed people so that music can touch their lives. Throughout the Bible, we read about songs being composed by God’s people. Miriam, Moses’ sister composed a song after the Lord delivered the Hebrew people from Pharaoh through the Red Sea. Mary composed a song after Elizabeth blessed her for being the mother of the Messiah. All of the Psalms were set to music and about half were written by King David.

Moses probably doesn’t come to mind as a song writer, but he is traditionally credited with Psalm 90 and he wrote the song that is referenced in Deuteronomy 31 and recorded in chapter 32. There are several reasons music is important, but at its essence, music is a key part of helping God’s people to fulfill their purpose to glorify Him and work with Him to build the Kingdom. Thank God for the gift of music and sing for the Lord.
