Passage: Psalm 65:1-13
At our church’s pre-K graduation, the teacher introduced each child and told what the boy or girl wanted to be when they grew up. The list included a fireman, doctor, zoo keeper, cheerleader and Spider-Man. The commonality in each of those answers is that the child chose a person, position or profession that he or she thought was special and dong something great.
God wired us that way, with an innate desire for greatness and to make a difference. The sin nature in people causes the world to view greatness as being identified by possessions, position, popularity, power or prestige. The disciples of Jesus had that view as they kept thinking Jesus would usher in the glory of the Davidic kingdom and overthrow their Roman oppressors. They each pictured themselves as having high positions in that kingdom and so they asked Jesus who would be greatest in the kingdom. The answer was not what they expected, for Jesus would explain that if you want to be great, look at a child.
