Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him. And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of His people Israel.” (1 Chronicles 14:1-2)
Passage: Psalm 67:1-7
The observation of a day for honoring fathers came after Mother’s Day had caught on across the country in the early 1900’s. As an official proclamation from the White House, Mother’s Day was designated as the 2nd Sunday in May by President Wilson in 1914. Father’s Day was not officially designated until President Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966 to observe the 3rd Sunday in June. It’s understandable and appropriate for mom’s to get the biggest recognition on a day, but it’s important to be reminded of how important father’s are in the home and men are in the church and society.
The world downplays the role of fathers and men, but statistics show their importance. For example, 90% of homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes; 71% of high school dropouts are from fatherless homes; 85% of youths in prisons grew up in fatherless homes. God raised up David to be a king and He purposed for David to help the people of Israel become a great nation. In much the same way, God calls men to rise up and be men of God who will bless their wives, their families and their communities for Christ.
