Life is Short Under the Sun

Passage: James 4:13-17, John 11:25-26
Not long after I became the Pastor at First Baptist, I made a home visit to a lady who was 99 years old and had been a member of the church for 50 years. She was confined to her bed, but still could visit, so I went by to get to know her as her new pastor. At the end of our visit, I asked if there was something I could pray for her about. She replied, “Yes. Would you ask the Lord to let me live a long time.” Obviously, she had already lived a long time, but at that moment in her life, the time ahead looked very short.
The number of people who live to 100 is extremely small, but regardless of how many years you live on this earth, Solomon observed the reality that life under the sun is short in comparison to the age of the earth and the number of years of human history. The answer to that under the sun perspective is to live life in the SON through believing in and receiving Jesus. He said, “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.” (John 6:47) When you are a believer, this world is not all there is. It is just the beginning. Jesus gives eternal life so you can live with purpose knowing the best is yet to be!
