Passage: John 14:15-21
The root of the Hebrew word, comforter, means to sigh. It refers to someone who sighs with another person who is hurting and in doing so, helps the person rest, knowing he or she is not alone. It also has a meaning of being a defender to help make things right. In the Greek, the word has an emphasis of coming alongside a person who is hurting in order to help them.
Those who are oppressed in the world need people who will stand up and speak up for them that they might not be oppressed economically, emotionally or physically. They also need people who will share with them the One who is the ultimate and eternal Comforter for our lives, Jesus Christ. The promise of the gospel is that when a person believes and receives Jesus as Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to permanently dwell in his or her life. Jesus said that He was one with God the Father and God the Spirit. He is the great Comforter in the midst of any oppression one endures on this earth and He gives assurance of heaven and eternal rest and security without oppression. We must share the gospel as we stand up for the powerless that people may know the Comforter, who will be with them through every trial.
