Passage: Matthew 5:43-48
The use of the word agape was extremely rare in Greek literature when describing love. That is because agape was a love which the Greeks felt was both undesirable and unattainable. It was love that was unconditional and extended to everyone regardless of a relationship or anything the person had done.
Jesus turned that notion on its head and let us know that agape is the highest form of love. It is the kind of love God has for everyone, because every person is created in His image and is significant in His eyes. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus pointed out the natural notion of people was to “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” He said, “But I tell you: Love (agape) your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” The Holy Spirit within you loves everyone. Let Him guide your thoughts and attitudes, especially in how you look at those in the world who have no regard for Christ and even those who act in immoral and illegal ways. God’s Word doesn’t tell you to affirm that behavior, or downplay differences, but He does tell you to see all people like He does. They are significant to Him and His greatest desire is for them to be saved. That begins with love.
