      Passage: Matthew 20:20-28

During the three years of his public ministry, Jesus spoke about the Kingdom of God and predicted His death, burial and resurrection on more that one occasion. However, the disciples kept holding on to view that Jesus, as the Messiah, would somehow re-establish the Davidic kingdom in Israel and they pictured themselves in prominent positions in that kingdom. One day, the mother of James and John came to Jesus and requested on behalf of her sons that Jesus would grant that they would have the highest positions in that kingdom by seating one on His right and the other on His left. The other ten heard about the request and they were indignant, probably because they pictured themselves in those positions too.
Jesus was quick to point out that the world’s idea of position and prominence was upside down. In God’s Kingdom, greatness is not determined by how many people serve you, but by how well you serve people. The Spirit of Christ within you does not look to be served. He looks to serve. Distinct love is self-less and serving. If you want to be like Jesus, be willing to serve. God sees every act of service and He will reward you for it.
