Passage: Matthew 6:25-33
When the Apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Philippian church while he was in a prison in Rome. The Romans did not spend much money taking care of prisoners and they provided a minimal amount of food and any clothing to keep a prisoner alive. Anymore than that had to be provided by family or friends who brought necessities and/or money to a prisoner to enable him to get additional food or clothing. One day, Epaphroditus arrived from Philippi with an offering to help Paul and Philippians is the letter Paul wrote in response.
Paul acknowledged and shared appreciation for the gift that God supplied through them, and he shared the promise that God would supply all their needs as well. That promise does not mean that every believer will be rich in this world’s wealth. The greatest riches are not what you hold in your hands anyway. They are the people you hold in your heart. Jesus is the first person and when you have Jesus and friends, you are already rich indeed. Joy comes in Christ when you affirm that fact and trust that God will take care of you. In a world that focuses on things, distinct joy in God’s supply makes you stand out for Him.
