      Passage: Mark 8:1-10

John 9 records an miracle where Jesus healed a man who was blind from birth. The account gives us an insight into what the Jewish people were taught about people who had disabilities, who were poor, or who had other needs. The disciples asked Jesus, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” (John 9:1) Their attitude and that of the religious leaders was that physical disabilities were a sign of God’s judgment and that God didn’t care about those people like He did others.
Nothing could be further from the truth. God loves people. All people. God cares for people. He has compassion toward people. Jesus showed that in the Temple when He healed people who were blind and lame right after He cast out the money-changers. The word healed is a Greek word that we get our English word therapeutic from. Therapy involves a healing touch and rehabilitation work. It includes doctors, nurses, physical/occupational/speech therapists and more. The church body is a therapy team to touch lives with God’s compassion and let people know that that God cares about them. No one is beyond God’s love and if we want to be a church that pleases Jesus, we need to understand that we are His hands to touch, His feet to go, and His heart to feel for the hurts of others.
