“At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear?’ ” (Luke 1:39-42)
Passage: Isaiah 9:6-7; John 3:16-18
When Zechariah was told that he and Elizabeth would have a miracle baby who would be the forerunner of the Messiah, he was not told that Elizabeth’s younger relative, Mary, would be the mother of the Messiah. After Jesus was conceived in Mary, she got permission to go stay with Elizabeth. I’m sure that the excuse was to help Elizabeth in her final months of pregnancy, but the main reason was to be with someone she knew would understand and be in a place where she could be encouraged.
That encouragement began the moment Mary entered Zechariah and Elizabeth’s home. Immediately, John, who was in the womb, recognized Jesus in Mary’s womb. He leaped for joy and the Holy Spirit let Elizabeth know that the Mary was carrying the Messiah. Christmas can never be fully experienced apart from recognizing who Jesus is. He is God in the flesh. The King of Kings, our Savior and Lord. Be encouraged that God loved you so much, Jesus came to this world for you.
