Passage: Psalm 119:97-104
When my siblings and I were children, our dad used to quote a verse from a silly song he learned as a child. The verse said, “I love myself; I think I’m grand. I go to the movies just to hold my hand. I wrap my arms around my waist. When I get fresh, I slap my face.” The chorus then began with “Boom, boom, ain’t it great to be crazy…” I think my dad thought that verse was funny, because it was so opposite of how he was raised and how he and our mom raised us. We were taught not to consider ourselves better than anyone else, but to know that God loved us and wanted us to the best we could be.
Our narcissistic world doesn’t understand that. Many people are truly caught up in thinking they are the center of the universe. As one writer said, “A person wrapped up in himself makes a very small package. God created you in His image, so you are very special. He wants you to have a proper love for yourself, but not an arrogant, self-centered love. The antidote to that self-centered narcissism is devotion to God’s Word, which is Jesus – the Incarnate Word and the Bible – God’s inspired Word which reveals Him to us. When you let the Word of God get in you, the Word will come out of you and make an impact for Jesus.
