Beauty in Humility

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “So Boaz said to Ruth, ‘My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls. . . At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, ‘Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me – a foreigner?’ ” (Ruth 2:8-10)
     Passage: 1 Peter 5:5-7

Boaz noticed Ruth when he went out to check on his fields and his workers. I am sure that Ruth was an attractive, young woman, but what really caught his attention was the way she was working and the humble spirit she had in doing it. When Boaz had inquired who Ruth was, the foreman said she was the Moabitess who came back with Naomi. He told Boaz that Ruth didn’t demand to glean in the field, though according to the law, that was her right. He told Boaz that Ruth asked and said, “Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves. . .” (Ruth 2:7)
We live a culture where many people “demand their rights” and show little or no respect for people in positions of authority. Humility is not a prized characteristic in the world, but it is a highly prized characteristic in the sight of God. When Ruth bowed her head to Boaz, she was reflecting a humble spirit and gave a show of respect common in her culture for someone in a position of authority. God honored that in her life and He will honor that kind of attitude when it is found in you.
