Read - (2 1/2 minutes) - "And now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving your today for your own good?" (Deuteronomy 10:12-13)
Passage: Psalm 139:1-4, Deuteronomy 6:4-5
When Moses gave a life lesson to Israel for having a closer walk with God, he shared two key attitudes that reflect giving honor to God. The first of those is the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is not to be understood as dread, but rather of reverential awe that comes from knowing who God is and that He sees everything. In our human nature, we tend to act better when we are aware that we are being watched. I heard of a preacher who was stopped for running a red light. The officer recognized him and said, “Don’t tell me you didn’t see that light.” The preacher replied, “I did see the light, I just didn’t see you!”
The second attitude Moses shared was to love God. The fear of God is foundational for honor and obedience. The love of God is relational. When I was young, I generally obeyed by parents out of respect and to avoid discipline. When I matured, my motivation to please them came out of love. Honor God with awe of who He is and obey Him out of love. You will have a close walk with Jesus as you do.
