Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and oil, and the firstborn of your heard and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.” (Deuteronomy 14:22-23)

     Passage: Matthew 6:19-24

God created a physical, material world for mankind. He wants us to enjoy His world, but the sin nature of man turns everything upside down. Instead of living to glorify God and seeing all of life as spiritual, our human nature focuses more on material things. God knows that, so in the commands He gave to Israel, one of them was to give a tithe, or a tenth of all they received back to God. There are three reasons God told the people to tithe, but the most important one is the first. It was to “teach the people to put God first.” (Deuteronomy 14:23, The Living Bible)

In Christ, we are under grace and not the law. However, Jesus did not do away with the tithe as a principle for God’s people. The tithe is not legalistic. It is relational that should be give out of love for Jesus with a heart to manage the rest and be generous in any way you can. Giving back to God first and not from leftovers, demonstrates that He and the Kingdom have priority in your life. You can give without loving, but you can’t truly love without giving. Love God and give back to Him.
