Passage: Psalm 42:1-5
Benjamin Franklin popularized a famous phrase when he used it in a letter after the U.S. Constitution was adopted. He wrote, “Our new Constitution is not established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” While some may find ways to actually avoid paying taxes, no one will ultimately avoid death. Deuteronomy is the record Moses wrote of his final words to the people of Israel after they spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness. Chapter 34 was written by Joshua, which gave the record of Moses’ death and a summation of his life. In that record, God gives us lessons on how to live a great life by getting on higher ground with Jesus.
In the final day of Moses’ life, God took him up to the top of Mt. Nebo, located just to the northeast of the Dead Sea. It rises up 2700feet above sea level, but 4000 feet from its base near the Dead Sea, which is in the lowest place on earth. That physical place is a good picture of the spiritual place God has for you in Christ that you can access regardless of how low things may seem at any time. In life and at the point of death, standing on higher ground with Jesus is the way to fulfill God’s purposes in your life.
