But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:5-6)
Passage: 1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1
Little children look up to the adults in their lives. They look up physically because the adults are bigger. They look up in dependence because the adults are their providers. They also look up to adults as examples of how to live and behave. Children learn more from what they see than from what they hear. The adage, “Do as I say and not as I do” is a terrible one that only teaches hypocrisy and makes a child think that the adult who says it doesn’t really believe his own words, because his actions betray them.
Jesus wanted children to be welcomed into His family and He calls on His followers to be godly examples for children to see. He considered this so important that He used an extreme example of it being better to drown in the sea than to be the cause of a little one to follow the wrong behavior of the adult he trusts. Think about the little eyes that may be watching you today and live a godly example for Jesus.
