Be Content in Jesus

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “Now this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, ‘I am not the Christ.’ They asked him, ‘Then who are you? Are you Elijah?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ ‘Are you the Prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ ” (John 1:19-21)
       Passage: Philippians 4:10-13

We live in a celebrity culture where many people idolize celebrities in film, TV, music, or sports. I read somewhere that as many as 1/3 of people in America may experience celebrity worship on a “borderline pathological level.” Reasons given include a neurotic fixation on the celebrity, narcissism of wanting the celebrities fame and fortune, low self-esteem and minimal religious orientation. In our day with the advent of cell phones, many people are seeking to make themselves celebrities by becoming influencers and filming their own lives everyday in a self-made reality show. Some succeed. Most do not.
In contrast to that, John the Baptist did not seek to elevate himself and grab greater headlines. He was content in who he was and in God’s call to him. One key for giving a focused picture of Jesus to the world is learning to be content. You are created in the image of God and He has already provided in Christ all you need for joy and happiness. There is nothing wrong with having a desire to achieve or be married, if you are single, but if you are not content now, you won’t be content if you get all you don’t have right now. Trust Christ and content in Him.
