Knowledge Under the Sun
Pray – (1/2 minute)
Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I devoted myself to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid on men! I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.” (Ecclesiastes 1:12-14)
Passage: Psalm 69:30-36
King Solomon was asked God for wisdom and God gave him the capacity to retain information and to have insight into people beyond anyone who ever lived. With that gift, Solomon decided to see if one could find true meaning in life if he didn’t have God in the equation. One of the areas that he searched in was education and learning. He became a true Renaissance Man. He became a writer of proverbs and music. He became an expert in plant and animal life. He became an architect and more. He perspective of knowledge apart from God was that it was meaningless.
Solomon was not degrading education when he said that. He encouraged people to get all the education they could and to be life-long learners. (See Proverbs 18:15, 19:27) He understood the value of education for people and for the betterment of society. He also realized that gaining more knowledge could not provide true meaning to life. That is only found in a relationship with Christ. Learn all you can, but stayed rooted in Him.
