Let The Spirit have His Way
Pray – (1/2 minute)
Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law.” (Galatians 5:17-18)
Passage: Romans 8:5-11
I once saw a cartoon of two people in a rowboat that made me laugh. They each had a set of oars, but they weren’t moving because they were facing each other and were rowing in opposite directions. That is a good picture of what is going on inside your life as a believer in Jesus Christ. Prior to receiving Jesus as Savior and confessing Him as Lord, you had one nature in your life. That nature is the sin nature, or flesh which you inherited from Adam, just like every other person on the face of the earth. When you received Christ, you received a new nature as Christ through His Holy Spirit came to dwell in your life.
Now you have two natures. Those two natures stand in direct opposition to each other and they are in conflict. The sin nature always wants to lead you away from fulfilling God’s purposes for you. The spiritual nature wants to lead you to live like Jesus. The nature which will have more power over you will be the nature you yield yourself to. Let the Spirit have His way and live by His power today.
