Passage: 2 Timothy 2:14-26
Greek culture despised the character of meekness/gentleness, because they were taught that one should stand up and fight back with offended and angry. They saw meekness as weakness, but in God’s definition, distinct meekness/gentleness is not weakness at all. It is strength under control. When Jesus gave the invitation to come to Him and take His yoke upon you, He gave a self-description of His own character and said, “. . . for I am meek/gentle and humble in heart. . .” (Matthew 11:29) Jesus was not weak. He was the strongest man who ever lived. Since all of us have sinned, everyone has given into temptation. Jesus never gave in. He stayed true to God the Father through the full force of every temptation Satan could devise. He displayed strength in standing up to the Pharisees, Jewish leaders and the power of Rome all the way to the cross.
Gentleness is strong to stand up to wrong and stand for right. It doesn’t quit on being faithful to Christ just because one doesn’t get his or her way about something or gets his or her feeling hurt. Distinct gentleness is tenacious to hold on to God’s Word and His purposes when the wild horses of your emotions tell you to let go and walk away. Jesus in you is strong. You are strong in Him too.
