      Passage: Psalm 37:1-6

Martin Luther was one of the men God used in Christian history to bring about what is known as the Reformation. One of the key doctrinal reforms he helped people understand was that salvation came by grace through faith and not by works. Luther was a Catholic monk and wrote, “I was a good monk and I kept the rule of my order so strictly that…if I had kept on any longer, I should have killed myself with vigils, prayers, reading and other work.” In all of that, he still had no sense of peace and wondered how what more he had to do to be good enough. God ultimately showed him that goodness didn’t come by his works, but by faith.
Distinct goodness in Christ isn’t something we do on our own. It comes through having being connected with God through faith in Jesus, letting God develop His character in us and then seeking to let our conduct be led by His Spirit and rooted in His Word. God showed this to the prophet Micah who shared the kind of goodness God desire we show. To act justly is to do what is right according to the Word. To love mercy is to be kind, compassionate and forgiving. To walk humbly with God is to worship and keep our connection strong each day. Thank God for His grace and let His goodness shine through you.
