Passage: Psalm 19:1-14
Robert Fulghum is a writer who is perhaps best known for a collection of essays that were published and became a best-selling book entitled, Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. Within the observations he made of life and relationships, one that stands out to me was a simple observation that rephrases an old idiom and gives a deep message. It says, “Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.” Words are powerful. They can help and they can hurt. They can build up and they can tear down. They can give courage to someone, and they can take courage away. The kindness of Christ in you calls for you to speak God’s kindness through what you say. That does not mean there can never be disagreements or correction or constructive criticism. Kindness seeks to help others be better and to give encouragement to their hearts. King David was conscious of his thoughts and the words that he spoke when he prayed in Psalm 19:14, “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Let that be your prayer today.
