      Passage: Matthew 9:35-38

One of the saddest social commentaries about American society today is seen in videos on social media when a crime or physical attack occurs and people film it. What often is seen is that many people, including those filming, stand around watching the attack, but they have no inclination to get involved. Like the priest and Levite in the parable of the Good Samaritan, they see a person hurting, but they do not see with God’s eyes and they do not feel with God’s heart.
The priest and the Levite in the parable saw that the man was hurt, but they were cold to the man. By Law, they knew that if they found out the man was alive and a Jew, they were required to help. That would have cause them to be late for their Temple service. If the man was dead and they touched him, the Law said they would have been unclean for a period of time and unable to do their Temple service. They avoided both scenarios by walking on the other side of the road. The Samaritan however, felt pity on the man. He didn’t think about the man’s nationality or religion. He displayed the heart of God and loved his neighbor like Jesus.
