Passage: 2 Peter 3:8-14
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He gave an answer that was simple. He said, “Love the Lord your God . . ., and love your neighbor as yourself.” He then said if you do this, you all the rest of the commandment hang on these simple things, which are really, love God and love people. Then, just before He was about to ascend to heaven, Jesus gave His disciples what we call the Great Commission. It is the application of loving God and loving people by seeking to make disciples for Christ.
It’s not complicated. Jesus gave a command, and He gave a simple method to carry it out. The first part involves being intentional about sharing the gospel in every way we can, everywhere we can, with everyone we can. The second part involves having new believers identify themselves with Christ through baptism. The third party involves instructing new believers in God’s Word and helping them learn how God wants us to live in this world and to become more like Jesus in our lives. When we really love God, we will love what He loves. God loves people. We must too.
