Passage: Matthew 5:14-16
As a citizen of a country on earth, a believer, who also is a citizen of heaven, has a responsibility to submit to the laws of the country. I am grateful for the freedoms we have as citizens of the United States of America, but the flip side of the privileges we have is the responsibility to pay taxes, show respect to our elected officials and follow the laws of the land. If we don’t like some laws or think the taxes are too high, the Christian response is to to follow them and use the freedom of seeking to elect representatives who will change the laws. The only time we can disobey a law if it directly contradicts a clear moral principle in scripture or if we are told we cannot worship.
As a citizen of heaven, we have the responsibility to serve God’s Kingdom. That service should be the service of love. God’s love is selfless, sacrificial and serving. It seeks the best for others and puts the needs of others ahead of ourselves. Jesus pointed out that we are set as lights in the world to shine out for Christ. Through our submission to authorities and our service to our fellow man, we will demonstrate the power of the gospel to transform lives. Serve well and let the light of Jesus shine through you.
