IMPACT

Read – (2 1/2 minutes) – “As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed Him.” (Mark 1:16-17)

       Passage: Psalm 44:1-8

In 1966, Dr. Sandy Astin, a professor at UCLA began a study called “The American Freshman”, which surveyed the attitudes and life goals of incoming college freshmen across the country. In that first survey, 82% of incoming freshmen said their number one goal was to “develop a meaningful philosophy of life.” Over the next 50 years, Astin observed that attitude declining more and more, with the result that in resent decades it is not even listed as important by half of the students. Instead, making money is at the top. I suggest that in 1966, a majority of students wanted to have an impact in the world, but they didn’t know how. Today, many students seem to want to make a difference for themselves.

God designed us to make an impact in our world for Him, however our sin nature has things turned upside down. In the world, we think our impact depends on performance, possessions, positions or power. The right side up of God’s design is that the foundation for making an impact is rooted in a relationship with God by grace through faith in Jesus. God wants you to make an impact in this world. Set your heart on Him and let Him show you all the ways He will use you do that.
