They took palm branches and went out to meet Him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ‘Blessed is the King of Israel!’ ” (John 12:12-13)
Passage: Psalm 149:1-9
Caiaphas and the Jewish leaders were plotting to kill Jesus and they assumed He would be coming to Jerusalem for Passover. They weren’t sure how to find Him, so they put out word that if anyone found out where Jesus was, they should report it. (John 11:57) They didn’t need anyone come help them find Jesus. On Sunday morning, He didn’t slip into the city in disguise. He rode into the city as the head of a parade. The Triumphal Entry as we call it was the formal presentation by Jesus of Himself as the Messiah. Zechariah had prophesied this event about 550 years earlier. Riding in on the back of a young donkey was His presentation as the King of Kings who was the Prince of Peace.
The people lined the streets as He came and shouted “Hosanna”, which means, “Save us, we pray!” It was not a quiet, one-time statement. It was a loud, continuous shout that magnified Jesus and pointed people to Him. True worship that turns people to Jesus must Christ-centered and dynamic. Worship Him with all your heart. Sing out your praise. Receive God’s Word with anticipation. That kind of worship will make an impact not only in your life, but in the life of others who need Jesus.
