Passage: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
One of God’s key principles for work and finances is to be diligent in handling both. The opposite side of diligence is laziness and God’s word has much to say about that. God designed us to work and make a difference in this world. That work doesn’t have to be for a paycheck, but even as we volunteer, we should do our best to use our gifts in service to others.
Solomon observed that human nature can trend in two ways when it comes to work. One is to be consumed by it. Another is to give no thought to it. A lazy person looks for excuses not to work. In Solomon’s illustration of laziness, it would be hard to imagine a farmer thinking it’s too windy to plant crops or thinking he can’t work at harvesting because it might rain. Yet, that’s how some people approach life. They do not want to work and expect others to provide for them. When Paul wrote to the Thessalonian church, he told them to work diligently and remind everyone that God designed us to work for what we have. Laziness gives a poor testimony for Christ. Be diligent in your work and finances as a testimony for Him.
