Passage: Joshua 14:6-9
Family matters to God. In His family, there are no grandchildren. God only has children and every one of His children are those who have put their faith in Jesus and confessed Him as Lord. In the perspective of eternity, age gaps between God’s children will be inconsequential, but while we are on earth, age differences are a part of the family structure with newborns through great-grandparents and every age in between. In the church family, God calls on His children to honor those who are senior adults in age, and He calls on the seniors to be kingdom builders and encouragers to those who are younger.
Caleb is an example of a kingdom builder. He was descendant of Esau, Jacob’s twin brother, but his family line of the Kenizzites had aligned themselves with the tribe of Judah when they went down to Egypt with Jacob during the famine in the land. Caleb was under the Covenant, but he affirmed his personal faith when he reminded Joshua how he had “followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly” when the other 10 spies gave a negative report. (Joshua 14:8) Kingdom builders understand that salvation comes by grace and not by works. Grace leads to gratitude. Gratitude brings growth and commitment.
