A lady was filling out a questionnaire that asked some background information about one’s church preference. She answered, “red brick”. Many people identify church as a place and building. Some use the word church to describe the practice of worship as in “We had church today”. However, the New Testament meaning of church is always people. The Greek word for church is ekklesia. It means the “called out ones”, or ”the assembly”. It always refers to the people of God, called out of the world and into a relationship with God by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
The church began on the day of Pentecost, which was fifty days after the Passover and on the fiftieth day after the resurrection. On that day, the Holy Spirit descended upon the 120 believers who were gathered in an upper room of a house in Jerusalem, praying and waiting just as Jesus told them to do. When the Spirit descended to permanently indwell the believers, the went out to testify about Jesus and spoke to thousands of people in the local languages they spoke form all the areas they were from. Peter stood and preached about dJesus and called people to put their faith in Him. Around 3000 responded and the church was born. Those new believers began to live out the purposes of God and they loved one another as they did it. Their love for Christ and His church was attractive and more and more people came to know the Lord. God wants all His children to show their love for Him as they show their love for His church and His love for people.
