Passage: 86:12-17
One of the reasons David loved God so much, was that He understood God’s character. God is merciful. God is gracious. Mercy is God not giving us what we deserve. Grace is God giving us what we do not deserve. Our sin deserves eternal punishment and separation from God, for “the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23a). We could never satisfy the righteous demands of a holy God, nor pay the debt of sin on our own. Yet, God ordained that He Himself, through Jesus, God the Son, would pay the debt for sin and offer us forgiveness and eternal life if we would simply believe in Jesus, confess Him as Lord and receive Him as Savior. That is mercy and grace.
In addition to that, David knew that while God is just and He does not overlook sin, He is slow to anger and patient with us. When we are in His family, He disciplines us, but not out of anger. His discipline comes out of His love. (Hebrews 12:4-6) God doesn’t change. His character is the same in the present as it was in the past, and it will be the same in the future. Acknowledge His character and your love will grow more and more each day.
