The Spirit Understands the Inner Conflict
Pray - (1/2 minute)
Read - (2 1/2 minutes) - "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. (Galatians 5:16-17)
Passage: Romans 7:18-20
One of the simplest competitions that is used from school P.E. classes to adult outdoor games is tug-of-war. All you need is a long rope and either two individuals or a team of people on each end of the rope with a handkerchief or something else tied on the rope to identify the middle of it. When the competition starts, the two sides pull against each other to see which one can pull the other toward themselves and get the handkerchief across a line on their side. Ultimately, the winner is whoever has the strongest pull.
You were born with a sin nature that manifests itself by opposing God’s purposes for you and leading you to sin. When you put your faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit came to permanently dwell within you. You now have two natures inside. Like the opponents in a tug-of-war, they are each pulling to have the most influence in your life. Which one will win that battle every day? The one that you feed the most. God understands that inner conflict and He wants you to feed and follow the Spirit nature so you can have victory in your life and be the best you can be.
