Grow Together in God's Word

Passage: 2 Timothy 2:14-19
When babies are hungry, they express their desire to be fed by crying. Once the feeding starts, they are satisfied and quiet down. Peter uses that picture in 1 Peter 2:2-3 when he writes, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual mil, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” Now, I’ve never heard someone cry if I didn’t preach, but I did hear of a country church preacher who saw a man cry during the service and later asked, “Was it the sermon that moved you to tears?” “No”, the man replied. “Then was it the music?” Again, the man said no. “What was it?”, the preacher asked. The man answered, “My beloved mule died this week and when you were speaking, you reminded me of him.”
Whatever I, or any other preacher reminds people of is not important. What is important, is the Word of God. Paul challenges Timothy to tell the believers to “correctly handle the word of truth”. (2 Timothy 2:15c) Growth to spiritual maturity is impossible apart from studying God’s Word. The believers who were part of the first church loved getting together to listen and learn from the apostles. Follow their example and be in a Bible Study group as well as worship to grow together in God’s Word.
